I sat down at the desk. There was nothing more to say. Inspector Taub walked over to the window and shook his head slowly. Hallgató was standing in front of the music stand. A possibility began to form in my mind like a half-remembered tune. Hallgató began to hum again the strange notes he had heard through the wall. He stared at the sheet of music, humming the tune over and over in an unstoppable rhythm. Suddenly, he cried out, just as Meklàr Hegedus had done.
“No! No! No!” He turned to me with horror on his face. “I see it. I see it!” And with terrible urgency, he rushed over to the desk and slammed the sheet in front of me. “Look! Don't you see? Don't you see it?!” Taub was staring open-mouthed in surprise. Snatching up the pen, Hallgató began to scribble feverishly and began the tune again, this time singing out the letters of the notes.
